Subject: Ever worked through summer and regretted it?
It’s SUMMER!
Okay, technically, summer doesn’t start until the solstice on June 20, but after Memorial Day, something shifts. You can feel it.
Last weekend, Jonathan and I went to our first outdoor concert of the season. It was the Rilo Kiley reunion tour—so much fun!
The warm sun on my face, a cold drink in my hand, the air buzzing with the hum of happy voices waiting for the show to start. It was one of those perfect moments that reminded me, “This is what I live for during the summer.”
And it’s finally here.
Which is why Nancy and I decided to use this month to ease into summer by setting clear intentions for the season ahead.
That feeling—of being fully present and alive—is what summer is about. But as business owners, it’s easy to lose touch with that when the season speeds up.
So let’s talk about the two extremes business owners tend to fall into during the summer months:
1️⃣ We ignore what’s happening in nature and keep grinding away in our businesses like we always do…
…and by the end of August, we feel sad, resentful, and burned out. We worked through the sunshine. We didn’t rest. We didn’t play. Another summer passes in a blur—and all we’re left with is a depleted spirit and some extra money in the bank.
OR
2️⃣ We go full Ferris Bueller and abandon work altogether…
…and while we have a lot of fun, we refocus on our business in the fall feeling scattered, behind, and like we’ve missed an opportunity to move something meaningful forward over the summer.
Sound familiar?
In our June podcast episode, Nancy and I talked about this exact tension. We both love summer so much—the long days, the energy, the magnetic pull to go outside and play. And we’ve both had seasons where we leaned too far in one direction or the other.
But what if there’s another way?
Instead of swinging between overworking and abandoning ship, what if we created a new rhythm—one that matched the actual energy of the season?
Summer is such an expansive season. We have so many hours of daylight. There is so much energy and so much growth happening!
When we let our bodies sync with nature, we experience an internal expansion of capacity during the summer, which means there’s actually room to do both—be productive in our businesses AND play!
This summer, we’re inviting you to try something different:
✨ Strike an intentional balance between play and productivity.
You don’t have to choose between being productive and being present. You can move something important forward in your business and play outside with your family. The key is intention—making a choice about what matters most in your life and business.
✨ Ask yourself, “How can my life and work nourish each other?”
What if your time at the river refuels your energy for client work? What if a moment of joy sparks clarity about your next project? What if making progress in your business gives you a boost of resources you can use to take a great summer vacation?
When you weave play and productivity together, magic happens.
Here are three questions we share in the episode you can use to set playful and productive intentions for the summer season:
→ What business projects do you want to work on this summer?
→ How do you want to have fun this summer?
→ How can you infuse playful energy into your work?
(We go deeper into each of these in the episode—including some personal examples of what we’re focusing on this summer. Listen here to hear how we’re setting our intentions.)
This summer, you don’t have to choose between play and momentum.
You can have both.
You can move your business forward and feel delighted by your life!
Let’s make this the summer where you feel truly aligned—professionally and personally.
