Subject: pulling back the curtain
Phone pinned awkwardly between my ear and shoulder, I root around my bag for my AirPods while listening to my mom ramble on about her upcoming cruise to Canada.Â
âItâs going to be so cold, Iâm going to need to get a new jacket! And I canât wait to get some fresh lobster and just relax on the ship and, oh before I forget, when are you coming home to visit?âÂ
Ahh, there it is.Â
I love my mom, but she canât go one phone call without asking me when Iâm coming back to Texas to visit.Â
âShort answer: never. Kidding, kidding!âÂ
She rolls her eyes so hard that the ground shakes from Texas to Oregon. Or maybe thatâs an earthquake? Another West Coast joke she does not appreciate. No sense of humor, that woman!Â
âHonestly, Mom, Iâm not sure. Itâll probably be closer to the holidays. My schedule is booked with travel at the moment.âÂ
âOh? Where are you going?â
âWell, Mexico in a few weeks, and then a bunch of cities on the East Coast, and then I come home for about a week before going back to New York City, and then San Franciscoââ I pause to clear my throat.Â
âWow!â she says. âThatâs quite a lot!âÂ
I laugh, âOh no, Iâm not finished. After San Francisco, Iâm going to Bend, and then in September, weâre going to Spain and Portugal for two weeks!âÂ
Thereâs a long pause before I whisper, âWow⊠that isâŠquite a lot.âÂ
This time, Iâm the one marveling at the plans Iâve laid out. âI, uh, didnât realize until just now how much travel I have coming up⊠that is⊠a lot,â I repeat.Â
Dread settles in my stomach like a lead weight.Â
We wrap up our call with a few pleasantries and a heaping dose of reassurance that I do love her very much even if my travel priorities suggest otherwise.Â
I pop my AirPods out of my ears and toss them onto the desk as I slump into my chair. Well, shit, I think, Iâve done it again.Â
Among my litany of bad habits, youâll find âchronically overcommits herselfâ highlighted in yellow, circled in red, and surrounded by asterisks with helpful reminders to slow down before saying yes.Â
But have I really overcommitted myself? Or am I finally prioritizing the way I actually want to live my life?
My gut reaction is to review the long list of the things I want to accomplish this year, and then systematically cancel/delete/postpone all of the âfun extrasâ that might impede my progress.Â
My dadâs voice echoes in the recesses of my memory: âWork first, play later.â âYou can sleep when youâre dead.â âWhatâd you have to show for yourself?â He is the Protestant Work Ethic personified. Â
Taking a deep breath, I invite myself to set aside the automatic self-criticisms:Â
đ Youâre so selfish!
đ Who do you think you are?
đ Youâre overcommitting again, and youâre going to regret it, ya big dummy!
Instead, I zoom out and observe my situation through a more integrated lens:Â
đ Youâve been working hard to create a business that supports your desire for flexibility.
đ Youâre saying yes from a place of alignment and joy, not obligatory people-pleasing.
đ It is time to step into the life youâve designed for yourself. It is time to test the systems youâve created to see if they can really support this vision!Â
In other words, can my business function with a jet-setting leader who is unavailable for work up to two weeks per month? Or even better, can my business grow and thrive without my constant attention?
Itâs time to test my theoryâis it truly possible to be deeply rested and wildly successful?Â
I imagine youâre asking yourself some of these questions too.Â
Most of the clients I work with have very similar desires. They are ambitious, hungry to create something beyond private practiceâsomething that expands their impact and income while reducing the number of hours theyâre plugged into their laptops.Â
They want to do things likeâŠÂ
đ travel the world with their family
đ pick-up their kids from school every day
đ only work 20 hours per week
đ take three months off per year
đ (insert whatever your vision is here)Â
The common thread? We all want more time and more flexibility.Â
More time + more flexibility = freedom.Â
Every year, I create more time and more flexibility for myself than the year before.Â
Last year, I took more time off and spent fewer direct hours with clients than ever before, and I made more money than ever before too!Â
My point is, I know this is possible.Â
But for some reason, this new chapter feels like the biggest jump Iâve ever attempted.Â
Between now and October, Iâm taking at least 8 weeks off from work. Iâll be traveling to 10 different places! When Iâm home, Iâll be spending more time outside, away from my computer, enjoying the glorious Pacific Northwest summer.Â
When I am working, Iâll prioritize giving my absolute best to my current coaching clients (they are truly my raison dâĂȘtre). Next, I want to welcome at least 20 new people into my Next-Level Therapist community. Then, I want to lay the groundwork for Rest & Success Code Season 3 in the Fall (woo hoo!) and experiment with a few smaller offerings designed to help you become deeply rested and wildly successful.Â
So, for the next 6 months, Iâm going to pull back the curtain and show you, in real time, how itâs actually going. Iâm going to tell you what my goals are for the month + how much I plan on working. Then, Iâm going to tell you what worked, what didnât, and what surprises I encountered along the way.Â
Personally, Iâm tired of admiring mentors from afar. Itâs too easy to set unrealistic goals for myself when Iâm basing whatâs possible on flashy stories of seamless success without seeing the messy behind-the-scenes, tear-stained failures, and unexpected setbacks.Â
I figured, âOkay, Maegan, if youâre tired of it, then maybe donât be that way yourself?!â đ€·ââïž
This email is my long-winded way of inviting you to join me on this journey. I donât know how itâs going to go⊠and yes, Iâm terrified I will fail right in front of you⊠but I am committed to telling you the truth.Â
Speaking of the truth, I want to know⊠What do YOU really want to know?
When you read emails from me and other mentors you follow, what do you wish they were sharing? What truths do you want exposed? Iâm making a lot of assumptions based on my own feelings, and I want to make sure Iâm telling you the truths you actually care about!Â
If you have any ideas or questions, hit reply and share them with me. I personally read and reply to every email you send me.
Next week, Iâm going to tell you about the 2 most important things Iâm doing to set myself and my business up for success over the next six months. These are things I coach my clients on all the time. Iâm confident youâll be able to apply them to your business too.Â
Oh, by the way, when youâre reading this email, Iâll be off-the-grid at a plant medicine retreat for healers in Mexico. đ§ Just a little proof that you can keep things moving in your business even when youâre offline living your best life.Â
Sincerely, thank you for joining me on this journey.Â
Iâm excited to connect with you more authentically over the next 6 months (and beyond).
Talk soon,
Maegan
